DESCRIPTION
This design by Alice Nampitjinpa Dixon depicts the trees in Alice’s country, Talaalpi. Her country is situated close to Kintore on the Western Australian border. She grew up there and moved to Haasts Bluff later in life.
This fabric has been screen printed by hand by Publisher Textiles and Papers, ensuring the highest quality and longevity.

DESCRIPTION
Doreen’s design shows a childhood memory of jumping in the back of a ute with her family and travelling from Papunya to Ulumbauru – a beautiful, special place with a dam for swimming.
Doreen is the daughter of Maudie Jugadai and Phillip Lane and the granddaughter (on her mother’s side) of Timothy (Timmy) Jugadai Tjungurrayi (1920-1988) and his second wife, Bessie. Philip Lane is a Warumungu man, from a region located 40km from Tennant Creek. Her grandfather, Timmy was born in 1920 in the dry Alalbi creek bed near Haasts Bluff, Northern Territory. Timmy’s father was an Ngalia (southern Warlpiri) man and mother a Luritja woman. Timmy and his other wife Naputta Nangala Jugadai were the founding members of Ikuntji Artists. Timmmy, who had been painting since the 1970’s, inspired his wives and children to paint. Leading onto a tradition of painting story and country that continues today.

Fabric care instructions: Princess Silk is of the highest quality silks, with 120 reed woven dupion. Dupion fabric is tightly woven with different sized weft and warp threads which gives it a textured appearance and highly-lustrous surface. The fibres are yarn dyed separately and then machine woven to make the fabric. Many colours are yarn dyed woven with different coloured warp and weft threads, giving an iridescent look.

In this Dreaming story, two dog ancestors, a Jampijinpa and a Napangardi, travelled from the west to the east. At Tapu (a rockhole), the two dogs separated. The female dog, Napangardi, went to the south. The male dog, Jampijinpa, went to the north. Eventually he became lonely and howled for Napangardi in the south. She came running to him, and they married each other at Ngarnka. They wore men’s and women’s marriage headdresses, and Jampijinpa painted himself with white clay for the ceremony. The two dogs continued running east, before arriving in Warlaku (Ali Curung). Many other dogs were living in Warlaku when they arrived. There were many families of dogs, mothers and fathers and children and uncles all living together. Jampijinpa and Napangardi made a burrow to rest in and started a big family of dogs there. They chose to stay in Warlaku and live with all the other dogs. In this way, the ‘malikijarra Jukurrpa’ (two dogs Dreaming) tells the story of proper conduct in families and marriages.

Mitjili paints the Watiya Tjuta tree. Mitjili’s style is unique and recognisable. The Watiya Tjuta in Mitjili’s paintings is her father’s Tjukurrpa (dreaming) in Ilyingaungau country (Gibson Desert). This was passed down to her by her mother, Tjunkayi Napaltjareri when story telling, using the same to draw the story as it is told in the traditional way. She remembers “…After I got married, my mother taught me my father’s Tjukurrpa in the sand, that’s what I’m painting on the canvas”, a women’s interpretation.

Pikilyi is an important natural spring and water-hole at Mt Doreen Station in the Northern Territory. Pikilyi is the home of two rainbow serpents, a married couple. The wife was a Napananka skin group and the husband a Japangardi, a taboo relationship in the Walpri culture. The serpents are the “kirda’ traditional owners of that country.

Susan has a unique style that has influence from both Tiwi and Arnhem Land cultures. In 1992 Susan Wanji Wanji travelled to Paris representing Munupi Arts.

Margaret Smith is an artist belonging to the Yankunytjatjara language and cultural group from the remote community of Imanpa, Northern Territory.

Margaret has been weaving since 2014 and quickly refined her artistic skills to create high-calibre baskets and sculptures. Margaret has developed a very unique and quirky style and often experiments with different animal sculptures such as cats and horses. She has taken part in many exhibitions, some of which include Fragrant Lands: Australian and Chinese Indigenous Art at the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Centre in Shanghai, 2014, Animal Instinct at Metropolis Gallery, Geelong, Victoria 2016, Tales from the Desert at Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery in Port Hedland, Western Australia, 2016 and Vincent Lingiari Art Award at the Tangentyere Gallery in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, 2019.

Alongside being an accomplished artist, Margaret has played a crucial role in NPY Women’s Council as a board member and advocate for many years. She is currently the NPY Women's Council Chairperson. Margaret studied interpreting in Alice Springs and became one of the very first Anangu accredited interpreters. Margaret is a highly regarded spokesperson for the NPY region, as well as a former Liaison Officer of Imanpa Arts and Crafts. She has been a member of a number of boards and committees including the Board of Management of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and the Cross-border Reference Group on Volatile Substance Misuse.
